    The Children of Lewis Pence

    (Jacob2 Pence, Johann Georg1 Bentz)

42 LEWIS PENCE was born about 1758 probably in Frederick County (later Shenandoah County and now Page County), Virginia; died in 1834 in Champaign County, Ohio, buried in Nettle Creek Cemetery, Mad River Twp, Champaign County; married Barbara Kibler 29 Apr 1782 in Shenandoah County (she died in 1824 in Champaign County, buried in Nettle Creek; published marriage bonds and the index to the bonds in the court house in Shenandoah County are in error that her name was Kiblinger). This Lewis is generally believed to be the son of Lewis Pence (No. 5). However, Lewis is named in the will of Barbara, widow of Jacob, and Frederick, called oldest son and heir of Jacob, divided Jacob's land grant exactly in two and deeded half of it to this Lewis in 1795. Lewis and Barbara Pence conveyed part of it to Emanuel (No. 44), another son of Jacob, in 1800. The possibility exists that Lewis Sr. also had a son named Lewis, but if so the records concerning him are indistinguishable from the records of this Lewis. Perhaps both Lewis, the son of Jacob, Lewis, the son of Lewis, had wives named Barbara; however, it is this Lewis who appears to have gone to Champaign County in 1820 where he purchased land from his first cousin, John Pence (a grandson of Lewis called John Pence the cousin of Lewis; a Champaign history mistakenly calls them brothers). Pence in 1900 in Richland Twp, Grant County, Indiana; he and wife Gail were in Wabash County, Indiana, in 1920; she remarried to Wilson Lostrutter(sp?) and she and her children were with him in Gas City, Grant County, Indiana, in 1930. Children:

    The Children of Daniel Pence

    (Jacob2 Pence, Johann Georg1 Bentz)

Shenandoah County, VA, and Champaign County, OH

43 DANIEL PENCE was born about 1760, probably in Frederick Co VA; died about 1839 in Champaign Co OH.; married Catherine Prince 10 Apr 1789 in Shenandoah Co VA (she was the daughter of Philip and Elizabeth Prince). His first deed record in Shenandoah was on 17 Aug 1790, when he purchased 200 acres on the Hawksbill Creek standing at the foot of a mountain in a line of the land which belonged to Jacob Pence deceased from Joseph Vincent. He apparently was living with his mother and siblings in 1783 and 1885 in Shenandoah Co, listed as the head of the household in 1783, but on the 1785 tax list his mother, Barbara, is listed as the family head. Daniel and his wife, Catherine of Shenandoah County sold the land he purchased from Vincent on 14 Sep 1805 and his name does not again appear in the deed books of Shenandoah. He next appears on 31 May 1811 when he bought land in Sec. 35 of Mad River Twp, Champaign Co OH at the Cincinnati land office. He probably was in Champaign before 1810 when a daughter married there. He is missing from the 1820 census, but in 1830 he is in Mad River Twp as Daniel Sen., age 60-70. An 1813 deed recorded in Champaign Co which refers to him as being from Greene Co appears to be in error. Children:

    The Children of Philip Pence

    (Daniel3, Jacob2 Pence, Johann Georg1 Bentz)

    Champaign County, OH

433 PHILIP PENCE was born about 1795 in Shenandoah County, Virginia (age 18-25 in 1820 census, 30-40 in 1830, 40-50 in 1840, age 60 in 1850, 64 in 1860 and 75 in 1870 census; age 83 on tombstone); died 21 Aug 1872 in Champaign County, Ohio (tombstone date), buried in Myrtle Tree Cemetery, Mad River Twp, Champaign County; married (1) Barbara Long 15 Apr 1816 (died 1846, age 47 years, 7 months, buried with Philip in Myrtle Tree Cemetery), (2) Catherine _____ about 1852 (after 1850 but before 1860 census; she was born in 1807, died 16 Apr 1862 "in her 54th year" in Concord Twp, Champaign County); first deed for Philip in Champaign County was in 1830; Champaign County death record says he died 4 Sep 1872, while a newspaper notice says 20 Aug 1872; this notice said he was a resident of Champaign County for about 60 years. The 1820 census lists 1 male -10, 1 female -10; 1830 census lists 1 male 5-10 (George W.), 1 male 10-15 (Surato??), 1 female 5-10, 1 female 10-15; and 1840 cenusus lists 1 male 15-20 (George W.), 1 female 15-20; if the death dates of the first two children below are correct, then he likely had two other daughters. Children, probably by first wife, include:

    The Children of Joseph Pence

    (Daniel3, Jacob2 Pence, Johann Georg1 Bentz)

    Shelby County, OH

435 JOSEPH PENCE was born about 1807 probably in Shenandoah County, Virginia; died before 1840, when his children were listed in a record relating to the settlement of their grandfather's estate; married Rachael _____ (possibly Harshbarger, per International Genealogy Index) about 1826 (she died 6 Nov 1876, age 69, at the Shelby County, Ohio, Infirmary), no record of marriage found; probably moved to Shelby County, Ohio, where his children were married. Four children, all listed as minors in an 1840 court record relating to his father's estate in Champaign County, Ohio:

    The Children of Emanuel Pence

    (Jacob2 Pence, Johann Georg1 Bentz)

Shenandoah County, VA, and Lincoln County, KY

44 EMANUEL PENCE was born about 1762 probably in Frederick Co (later Shenandoah Co and now Page Co) VA; died before 1820 in Lincoln Co KY; married Catherine _____ about 1784 probably in Shenandoah Co; they sold land in Shenandoah Co in 1801 and moved to Lincoln Co; Emanuel Pence bought half of his father's original land grant from his brother Lewis on 9 Jun 1800; on 7 Sep 1801 he sold land to Adam Kibler (likely his brother-in-law) and to Jacob Pence (probably his brother) and his name is not found in the Shenandoah Co records after that date. E. Pence bought 250 acres of land on Logan's Creek in Lincoln Co from Jacob Swope in early 1802; it also appears there was another Pence family in Lincoln Co (which then covered a far larger area) by the mid-1790s, as two Pence marriages are on record then (these may have been in a part of Lincoln Co that later became a part of another county); Emanuel, older than age 45, is the head of a household in Lincoln Co in 1810; Catherine appears as the head of the household in 1820 and 1830; the census records indicate they may have had as many as five sons and ten daughters, but since Catherine was older than 55 in 1820, it is probable the two females under 10 that year were grandchildren; it appears, however, that by 1845, when the oldest son John made his will, there were but three living sons (John, Adam and Emanuel); John also mentioned his sisters, but did not name them (see John, below); 11 children can be inferred from census and marriage records of Lincoln Co and appear to include those listed below; one son appears to have died young; William, because he was not mentioned in his brother John's will, may have died before 1845 or was not a son of Emanuel and Catherine; the birthplace for the older children is given as VA on later census records.

    The Children of Adam Pence

    (Emanuel3, Jacob2 Pence, Johann Georg1 Bentz)

    Lincoln County, KY

444 ADAM PENCE was born 7 Jul 1791 (tombstone date, born in Kentucky according to 1850 census of Lincoln County, Kentucky, but pension papers indicate he was born in Aug 1795 in Virginia and give same death date as tombstone); died 16 May 1873 at Stanford, Lincoln County; married (1) Martha M. (Patsy) Saunders 10 Mar 1823 Lincoln County (she died in 1819 according to pension papers), (2) Mary Ann (Polly) Hall 21 Feb 1829 in Lincoln County, (3) Mary Ann Worrell 26 Feb 1837 in Garrard County, Kentucky; pension from War of 1812; was in Lincoln County in 1850 with wife M. Shenandoah County, VA, and Champaign County, OH

45 JACOB PENCE was born about 1771, probably in Frederick Co VA; died 9 Oct 1850 in his 79th year in Champaign Co OH, buried in Spring Grove Cemetery there; he is said to have been born in Buckingham Co VA in a Champaign County history, but this is an obvious error as he married Eve Prince 29 Dec 1798 in Shenandoah Co VA and his home was there (she died in Champaign Co in 1821 and was first interred on their farm and later moved to Spring Grove Cemetery, daughter of Godlove Printz and Magdalene Crumm); he likely was the Jacob, cooper, in Shenandoah Co in the 1810 census, living next to Frederick Pence and Jacob Pence, blacksmith; went to Champaign Co probably in 1819; described as Jacob Pence (of Jacob) in an 1811 deed in Shenandoah Co.

    The Children of Barnhart Pence

Children:

    The Children of Lewis Pence

    (Johann Georg1 Bentz)

Shenandoah County, VA, and Champaign County, OH

5 LEWIS PENCE was baptized 31 Dec 1724 in the Reformed Church at Iggelheim, Pfalz, Bayern, Germany, the son of Johann Georg Bentz and Anna Barbara Bullinger, and came to America with other members of his family on the ship Phoenix in 1749; died before 25 May 1779 in Shenandoah Co VA, when his oldest son, John, sold some of his land; the full name of his wife is unknown, although she is identified on a deed record as Barbara in 1767; a 1794 Shenandoah Co marriage bond gives the parents of a Susannah Pence as Ludwig and Minerva (see Susannah below), so it is possible he had a second wife, but this seems unlikely; the earliest record found of him after his arrival in America is when he purchased 49 acres of land from Rudolph Mauck in Frederick Co VA on 26 Aug 1754; he and his wife Barbara sold this tract to Caspar Taylor 2 Jun 1767, after having received a grant of 440 acres from Lord Fairfax on 7 Nov. 1757; since no will or estate record can be found for Lewis or his wife or wives, and the church register which may have contained information on his family is lost, the names of his children may never be accurately identified; only his oldest son John can be documented; all others attributed to him by some are speculative, as indicated below.

    The Children of John Pence

    (Lewis2 Pence, Johann Georg1 Bentz)

Shenandoah County, VA, and Clark County, OH

51 JOHN PENCE was born about 1755, probably in Frederick Co VA; died before 1830 census, probably in Clark Co OH; married Elizabeth _____, probably in Shenandoah Co; described in deeds as the oldest son and heir of Lewis Pence in Shenandoah Co, the first of which was recorded on 29 May 1779; no dates of death have been found for either John or Elizabeth, but they can be inferred from census, deed and marriage records; moved to Clark Co (then Champaign Co) in 1805, possibly with some of the Kiblinger family; he and his sons Peter and Abraham are there in the 1820 census of present-day German Twp in Clark Co; John Pence and wife Elizabeth sold 60 acres to Daniel Kiblinger, probably their son-in-law, on 19 Jul 1814; John Pentz (no wife mentioned, indicating her probable prior death) then sold the remaining 50-13/100 acres to Martin Baker on 23 Oct 1827 and his name disappears from the tax land records. The 1826 tax roll for Clark Co shows him with 50 acres in the north part of the southeast quarter of Sec. 9, German Twp, and he is listed with the same 50 acres in 1827. In 1828 there is no list and in 1829 he is listed for 50 acres, but this is crossed out with the notation transfered to Martin Baker. This John Pence likely was the John Junr. who served in Captain Michael Reader s company in the Revolution, although there is no ready indication of why he was called Junr. (See muster roll.

Children, from estate settlements in Clark County, and a family list:

    The Children of William Pence

    (Abraham4, John3, Lewis2 Pence, Johann Georg1 Bentz)

    Clark and Champaign Counties, OH

5124 WILLIAM PENCE was born in 1807 in Clark County, Ohio; died 1 Oct 1880 in Millerstown, Champaign County, Ohio (place in news item, death reported by Elliott Pence), buried in Spring Grove Cemetery, Johnson Twp, Champaign County; married (1) (Elsie) Delilah Colbert 8 Jan 1829 in Champaign County (she was born in 1809, died in 1854, buried in Spring Grove Cemetery), (2) Mrs. Phebe A. Scott 18 Mar 1856 in Champaign County. The children below are from a list on a monument to William and Delilah ("Our Parents") in Spring Grove Cemetery, as well as the 1850 and 1860 censuses of Champaign County:

Children:

    The Children of Henry Pence

    (Johann Georg1 Bentz)

Shenandoah County, VA, and Champaign County, OH

6 HENRY PENCE was born - Oct 1739 in Iggelheim, Rhineland-Pfalz, Germany; died in 1824 in Champaign Co OH; married Mary Magdaline Blimly (known as Mary Flowers to some descendants; probably an English translation of blumlein, the German word for flower) about 1765, probably in VA. He was granted 474 acres on the Hawksbill Creek in Frederick Co VA (later Shenandoah Co, now Page Co) on 30 Mar 1770. Moved to Mad River Twp, Champaign Co about 1805, along with most of his family, including nieces and nephews (the exodus apparently began about 1805 and lasted until 1820; the last of Henry's sons went in 1811). The will of Henry Pence, Book B, p 47, Champaign Co: My beloved son-in-law John Norman all my land on which I now live containing one hundred and thirty-five acres; Norman to pay my son Benjamin Pence five hundred dollars, and six hundred and seventy-five dollars to my other children within five years after the death of my self and wife as follows, to Jacob Pence my eldest son, two dollars, to the heirs of my son Samuel Pence, decd, two dollars and the balance of the six hundred and seventy five dollars the said Norman is to pay in equal proportion to to the other children Henry Pence, Abraham Pence, John Pence, David Pence, Joseph Pence, Isaac Pence, Rubin Pence, Susanah Jenkins, Anna Norman, Elizabeth Stoneberger, Mary Runkle and the two sons of Barbary Stewart dec'd, Joseph Rosenbarger and Henry Steward, which two boys to have one equal share between them. William Runcle and John Norman, executives, dated 10 Apr 1820, filed 1 Dec 1824. A list of the children of Henry Pence and Mary Blimly was made early this century by a descendant of Henry's son Benjamin in Bartholomew Co IN, no doubt from family records; this same list was published late in the 1880s in a Champaign Co; the dates on this list match most of the known dates of his children, so it appears to be authentic. All of the following children were likely born on the Hawksbill Creek near Stanley, VA, now Page Co (it was Frederick Co until 1772 and then became Shenandoah Co and was so for the time these Pences were there; Page Co was created in 1832). Children (for more details on each of these, with documentation, see The Hawksbill Pence Families):
